When we say “family,” we truly mean it. At Toyota of Irving, this is your place—a dealership built on relationships, trust, and generations of care. Our story began with Vernon Schoemaker, whose career in the automotive industry started in the late 1940s after serving three years in the U.S. Navy. Working alongside his uncle in Amarillo, Vernon learned that doing right by people mattered more than any single sale. Those principles became the foundation of everything we do today.
Years later, Toyota presented Vernon with the opportunity to open a dealership in the Dallas–Fort Worth area. While relocating his family was no small decision, an unexpected offer on their home—before it was even listed—made the path clear. The Schoemakers packed up and headed to Irving, knowing they had found the right place to build something lasting.
Toyota of Irving opened its doors on September 15, 1968, in a small building on East Irving Boulevard. The early years shaped our character—navigating industry challenges, adapting through economic change, and earning the trust of our community one customer at a time. Through it all, one idea remained constant: this dealership would always be a place people could rely on.
By the late 1970s, that trust and growth led us to our current location along what is now Highway 183. Vernon built the dealership he had always envisioned—designed for growth, equipped with the best tools available, and rooted in the Irving community. Around this time, Vernon’s son David became deeply involved in the business, followed later by David’s sons Jereme and Jonathan, marking three generations of Schoemakers serving North Texas drivers.
In 2014, we took another step forward. As Airport Freeway expanded, so did our vision for Toyota of Irving. Our dealership was thoughtfully modernized, reusing 72% of the original structure, earning LEED Green Building Certification, and adding customer-focused amenities throughout. Family members were involved every step of the way—from design and architecture to technology and final details—ensuring the space reflected who we are and who we serve. It stands today as a collaboration between our employees, our family, and our community.
